GROWING A SUSTAINABLE WORLD WITH HEMP

date: 21 August 2020

Hemp is an incredible plant. It can be used in so many ways, for so many different things. It’s not just an invaluable source of CBD; the potential Hemp uses go above and beyond. So, we’re going to explore how the Hemp plant is being used to help cultivate innovation and create a more sustainable world.

 A NEW SOURCE OF FUEL

Humans are still far too reliant on fossil fuels to power homes, cars, factories – sourcing and using them has a devasting impact on the environment. We need a sustainable source of energy and Hemp can be just what we need because it can be used to create biofuel. Whilst the fuel Hemp creates isn’t as efficient as fossil fuels like petrol, it releases much less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and can be made much, much quicker.

CONTEMPORARY SOLUTIONS WITH AGE-OLD REMEDIES

Plastic is another problematic facet of human life that desperately needs replacing. Hemp could be exactly what we need. The stems are full of cellulose, and this can be used to create a natural, biodegradable alternative to crude oil, taking away many of the problems that arise by using and creating petroleum-based plastic.

 HEMP USES IN OUR HOMES

As the human population grows, so does our need for new housing, new commercial buildings and all those other necessities. These tend to require concrete, which uses sand that’s often dredged up from river or sea-beds. The process of collecting the sand has a catastrophic impact, destroying habitats and disrupting sea-life populations. Hemp be used to create Hempcrete, a sustainable form of concrete that releases about 80% less C02 into the atmosphere.

FASHIONING A MORE SUSTAINABLE FASHION INDUSTRY

Hemp was one of the top clothing textiles until cotton came into favour. Compared to Hemp, cotton needs more land and water and isn’t suited to as many climates – so it’s far from sustainable. Luckily, brands like Patagonia and Levi’s are embracing the Hemp plant, bringing it into their collections and showing everyone how it can be used.

Nowadays people ask, ‘what is Hemp used for’, when Hemp used to be integral to human life. It was used for almost everything: food, fabric, paper, even body armour. After a pretty tumultuous time, Hemp is back and it’s helping us discover new ways to live more harmoniously with Mother Nature.
