How does CBD work on the skin?
CBD is known for its healing properties, and has been seen as a beneficial antioxidant – more beneficial than vitamin C and E. Many essential amino acids are found in CBD, as well as B-complex vitamins.
At APOTHEM we regularly talk about the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which every human and mammal has as our ‘master regulator of physiology’ inside our bodies.
ECS receptors work in a way that endocannabinoids (cannabinoid-like molecules that we create inside our bodies – otherwise known as endogenously) bind to them and fit perfectly, like a lock and key. It connects in a way that your body’s function needs, adapting to bring about harmony. CBD is a cannabinoid that, whilst not produced by our own bodies, it mimics the same shape, and so also fits like the lock and key, binding to the receptor and bringing about balance.
It turns out our skin has its own ECS which contains a dense network of receptors and helps to manage various biological processes. Our skin is our biggest organ, and so it’s important to be conscious of how we treat it and what we put on it. Recent studies show that the skins’ ECS seems to control the balance of skin cells, keeping them functioning in a healthy state, with the goal being homeostasis – or balance.
The root of most skin disease and damage, such as acne, inflammation, itching and scarring is thought to come from some kind of imbalance that occurs.
CBD’s benefits come from its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system and the communication that happens between the pathways and other receptors in the body. Thanks to its regulatory and balancing compound, it can be beneficial for a wide variety of skin types and conditions.

Hemp Seed Oil which differs from CBD oil – contains fatty acids which protect against inflammatory, oxidation and other causes of aging, as well as helping to repair mature and damaged skin.
Green Tea Oil is an effective antioxidant which helps protect the skin from environmental damage, whilst improving the skin's appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Mango Seed Oil contains fats that are great for skin conditioning and are high in antioxidants which helps to prevent sun damage and premature aging.
Oat Extract is a powerful natural antioxidant, renowned for calming the skin. It has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antioxidant and moisturising effects, and is stellar for maintaining the skin barrier’s integrity and protecting from environmental stressors, reducing redness or scaliness.
Calendula Flower Extract is used for its anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties.
Jojoba Seed Oil works by absorbing within the first layer of skin thereby softening from the inside out and increasing elasticity. It’s very similar to the protective layer of human skin as it mimics the skins own sebum and doesn’t block pores and is easily absorbed making it perfect for all skin types, especially dry skin. It prevents transdermal water loss and retains moisture.
